United Independent School District (United ISD) is proud to announce that 203 of its high school students have been recognized by the College Board through the 2024-25 National Recognition Program. This prestigious award celebrates the academic achievements of Hispanic/Latino, African American/Black, Indigenous, and first-generation students, highlighting their dedication to excellence and the district’s commitment to fostering diversity in education.
The National Recognition Program, now in its fifth year, received applications from over 180,000 students across all 50 states. Of these, 90,000 students earned honors, underscoring the program’s mission to support underrepresented groups and promote equity in education.
Criteria for Recognition
To qualify for this honor, students had to meet rigorous academic standards. For juniors, eligibility required:
- Ranking in the top 10% of PSAT 10 or PSAT/NMSQT test-takers in their state.
- Earning a score of 3 or higher on at least two Advanced Placement (AP) Exams by the end of 10th grade.
- Maintaining a GPA of 3.3 (87-89%) or higher.
- Identifying as Hispanic/Latino, African American/Black, Indigenous, or first-generation.
Sophomores faced similar requirements, with adjustments for testing timelines. These criteria ensure that the program recognizes students who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance and commitment throughout their high school careers.
A Celebration of Achievement
Mario Rosales, United ISD Director of Advanced Academics, expressed his pride in the students’ accomplishments:
“On behalf of our Board of Trustees, I congratulate these outstanding students for their dedication and hard work. They serve as role models for their peers, and we wish them continued success in their future endeavors.”
The National Recognition Program was designed to address systemic barriers that historically underrepresented students face in pursuing higher education. Arielle Ford, Director of Strategic Engagement and Programs at the College Board, emphasized the program’s mission:
“These initiatives aim to create pathways to college for underrepresented students and expose them to a diverse range of higher education opportunities. By connecting students with colleges, we hope to broaden their horizons and help them achieve their academic goals.”
A Legacy of Inclusion
The College Board’s recognition programs trace their roots back 40 years to the National Hispanic Recognition Program, which sought to increase opportunities for academically talented Latino students. Building on this success, the College Board expanded the program in 2019 to include African American, Indigenous, and Rural/Small Town Recognition. This evolution reflects a broader commitment to inclusivity and equity in education.
Awardees also benefit from the College Board’s Student Search Service, which allows colleges to identify and reach out to recognized students with tailored information about admissions and scholarships. This initiative helps students explore a wider range of post-secondary options and access financial support for their education.
United ISD’s Standout Students
The 203 honorees from United ISD represent several high schools across the district, with Alexander High School leading the way in the number of awardees. Other schools with notable recognition include L.B. Johnson High School, United High School, and United South High School. These students exemplify the district’s dedication to academic excellence and its diverse student population.
A Bright Future Ahead
The recognition of these students not only celebrates their individual achievements but also highlights United ISD’s commitment to providing high-quality education and equal opportunities for all. As these students continue their academic journeys, they carry with them the pride of their families, schools, and community.
This honor serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering an inclusive educational environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed. United ISD remains dedicated to supporting its students as they strive for excellence and pursue their dreams.
